Sprint Website Redirecting - It's Official!

Sprint has admitted in a tweet that they are aware their website is redirecting visitors to another website. See this tweet: Sprint website redirect (a new window will open).

I believe I was the first to report this problem on January 26, 2012 (See: Was The Sprint Website Hacked?)

I'm writing this post on January 28, 2012, in the evening (PT) and it appears Sprint still has not resolved this issue, which is jaw dropping amazing on the scale of irresponsibility.

So dear reader, my advice to you is use caution for now and visit a local Sprint store to pay your bill if you don't want or can't mail it in. And as always, keep your computer's operating system (OS) and virus protection up to date.

Sprint Website Redirecting [Updated]

Well, this is interesting. While the person who spoke to me yesterday wrote Sprint after we talked asking for support on their perception of the issue, as I write this update they are still without a response. However, I'm guessing you are reading this post because you are wondering too if the Sprint website was hacked, yes?

Perhaps the Sprint website was redirecting you?I can tell you my normally pretty quiet little blog saw a surge of traffic overnight and today for folks searching for these terms:

sprint webpage redirect
sprint website hacked
sprint website hacked?
sprint site hacked

sprint website redirected
was the sprint web site hacked

Soooo, clearly something is up. Either good folks like you are infected with malware or some redirection of users of the Sprint.com website is taking place for some reason.

The odds though are increasing that the Sprint website got hacked. Not concrete proof yet, of course, but there ya go.

I may be wrong but I think I was the first to report this issue. Those of you coming here to read the post because you experienced the issue, please take a moment to comment and share your experience. None of you have so far. You don't have to use your real name (unless Blogger somehow forces you - if that makes you uncomfortable, I understand why you don't want to comment.) But unless people share their experience it will be more difficult to figure out exactly what happened.

No matter what, please be careful!

Was The Sprint Website Hacked? Possible Redirect Code

Just got off a call with someone who was concerned because when they went to the Sprint.com website about a half an hour ago, they were getting redirected, nearly instantly, to a url on the domain pagesinxt.com - a known source of malware-related trouble. They were using a Google Chromebook at that time. I poked around the 'net a bit and found references to other sites with redirect code to that domain placed in the source code of their pages using various techniques, including javascript. Thus I suspected the Sprint site was to blame.

Of course, their Chromebook could also be infected with malware. So I had them try again using an Apple iPad. Same result, nearly instantly. Different OS, different device, different browser... unless the redirects are coming from their ISP this sure sounds like it must be a hack of the Sprint website. Yet I can't find anyone else posting anything about it. That too is very odd.So, be very careful and be sure you keep your OS and security software up to date.

Meet Evi - 'Siri' For The Rest of Us [video]

Siri, the voice recognition tool from Nuance built into the iPhone 4S, is facing some competition from within. Evi uses the same technology but it is compatible with any iPhone, iPod touch or iPad using iOS 4 or later.

It costs just .99 in the app store and there will also be versions for those using Android phones. Early reports claim that while it is not as deeply integrated as Siri, it seems to do a better job at being "smart." I've also seen some reports of server overload which is not surprising so soon after launch. Nikon D7000 Time Lapse Tutorial [Video]

In this first episode we share a test shoot of the intervalometer feature offered by the new Nikon D7000 HDSLR camera. We wanted to create an HD video time lapse sequence from large size fine quality jpeg stills. The images were taken on a tripod just after a massive rainstorm cleared, at sunset, on a California beach. The Nikon D7000 is the much sought after HDSLR that finally brings professional grade HD video features and quality to the Nikon line.

All photos captured with the Nikon D7000 camera, a Nikkor 80-200mm lens at 80mm, ISO at ASA 200, and white balance to daylight. The first sequence was shot at a shutter speed of 1/100th, the second at a shutter speed of 1/13th, and the last at a shutter speed of 1/25th.

Is it just me, or is there an epidemic of Twitter spam followers? By spam followers I mean accounts that appear to be following you, and dozens if not hundreds more, and the profile of the user (fake follower) is something about a lonely woman and a link to some other site - hidden of course - by a url shortener.

Day after day I'm seeing these annoying things and I've got to wonder, given how similar they are, can't Twitter create some algorithm to detect and remove them? Before their account ever goes live? Come on Twitter - deal with this spam problem please!

HTC Phone Security Hole!

Published reports claim that recent updates to some of the HTC cell phone line have created serious security holes.

The reports claim the phones, which run the Android operating system, thanks to HTC-produced updates, now log a very large amount of the user's information, including GPS data, e-mail addresses, phone numbers and text messages. This data, say the reports, can possibly be tapped by so-called rogue apps.

The reports claim users of the HTC EVO and HTC Thunderbolt should pay careful attention.

One of the qualities of the Android operating system is its Android App Store ecosystem is much less controlled than the Apple iPhone and iPad App Store. As a result, more rogue (dangerous - perhaps with malware) applications have troubled Android phone users. That's not to say there have been no rogue apps in the Apple world, just fewer. Android phone users should be careful, like all cell phone users!

Video Production Services In 2011

Video has gone from the ugly stepchild of film to the de facto standard. This is surprising for those who have been around video production since the 1980s, if not shocking. Quality independent movies, tv commercials and documentaries were all shot on 16mm or 35mm film. Only news programs - local and network, and cheesy local tv commercials for mattress warehouses and used car dealers were shot on video.

What passed for broadcast video production technology in those days had already evolved beyond 2 inch video, but field production and news production was still achieved with 1 inch video recorders and 3/4" video systems. UMATIC was also used to describe the smaller video recording system. On the camera side the pinnacle of quality and utility was the Ikegami HL-79D. While your author recalls the price of a 79D with lens in those days as close to $100,000 (US), a recent internet search produced references to prices (in 80s dollars) closer to $75,000 or so. Still, given the fact that today's consumer HD camcorders deliver higher resolution (though other specs may fall short) for anywhere several hundred dollars to a few thousand, it is amazing how far the quality has come and how low the prices have fallen.

Gone too is the boat anchor of video tape. Now we can record on flash drives (though they don't last forever), copy the video to our computers and off we go.

So how does this effect you, the potential client for video production services? First, some cautionary notes: Because the cost of video production equipment has dropped it has made it much easier for people to buy video cameras and video editing software and call themselves a video production company. But the skills required to produce, direct, shoot and edit video, including full post production services like narration (voice over) and music, sweetening and sound effects, are not so easily acquired. Look carefully at demo reels and years of experience before hiring someone to produce your viral video.

As with most things, you do really tend to get what you pay for - the low bid rarely offers the best value or quality.

Before seeking bids on your next video production ask yourself these questions:

Do I need a broadcast quality video production? (If your use does not include airing on local, network, cable or satellite television the answer is no.)

Do I need HD (High Definition)? (If your use is only on your website or YouTube the answer again is likely no.)

Do I need professional voice over (narration) or on-camera hosting? (This is a quality and cost call you need to make.)

Do I need original music, no music or royalty free (library) music? (Again, this a quality and cost choice.)

So don't buy more video flash or expense than you need but do plan and source quality video production from an experienced video production service to avoid problems with quality and delivery of your program. And know before you start what it is you intend to accomplish with your video and where you intend to run the finished video production.

Flying The F-35 Lightning II JSF Joint Strike Fighter

A pilot from Edwards Air Force Base, California, became the first Air Force and government test pilot to fly the F-35 Lightning II during a test sortie at the Lockheed Martin facility January 30 at Naval Air Station Fort Worth.

Lt. Col. James Kromberg, the director of operations for the 461st Flight Test Squadron, flew the F-35, numbered AA-1, which is currently flying envelope expansion, flying qualities evaluations, subsystems testing and initial systems assessments at Fort Worth.

The test flight consisted of the takeoff, handling qualities maneuvers, engine throttle transients, formation maneuvers with an F-16 Fighting Falcon and the landing.

After the flight, Colonel Kromberg said the F-35 flew "very well."

"The aircraft was responsive across all flight regimes," Colonel Kromberg said. "The engine thrust response was excellent -- accelerating very quickly. The aircraft was very stable during formation flight."

The colonel said he was very excited to fly the F-35.

"I have been smiling since arriving at the aircraft this morning and haven't stopped," he said.

Before the flight, the test team briefed Colonel Kromberg covering all test maneuvers, safety of flight requirements and potential emergency procedures.

Prior to flying the F-35, Colonel Kromberg received training at Fort Worth in the aircraft simulator, control room crew resource management and emergency procedures. He's been a part of the test team since September 2005.

Aside from the training, Colonel Kromberg said he was involved with helping draft the F-35's initial flight manual, test plans and aircrew training procedures. He has more than 3,200 flight hours experience flying various aircraft including the F-16, F-15 Eagle, T-38 Talon and AV-8B Harrier.

Before joining the Air Force in 2003, Colonel Kromberg was a Marine officer from 1987 to 2003. During that time, he attended Naval Flight Training, served in three AV-8B Harrier squadrons as both a maintenance and operations officer, attended the Air Force Test Pilot School and served as the lead AV-8B operational test director. Before his current stint at the 461st FLTS, Colonel Kromberg served as the Test Pilot School assistant operations officer and plans and programs director.

As a former Marine with AV-8B experience and a graduate of both the Marine's weapons school and Air Force's TPS, he is uniquely qualified to be the first military pilot on this joint program, said Col. Arnie Bunch, the 412th Test Wing commander.

"As the Edwards Integrated Test Force director of operations, he is the military pilot most closely associated with tests of AA-1," Colonel Bunch said. "He has participated in simulator tests, flight control development and cockpit design of the JSF for the last two years."

Because the F-35 is in the development stages, only Test Pilot School graduates can fly the aircraft first, Colonel Bunch said. The initial pilot cadre -- contractor and military -- are chosen for their fighter aircraft backgrounds, extensive test experience and experience in the JSF program.

There are advantages to having both contractors and military testers fly test missions, Colonel Bunch said.

"Contractor pilots typically are assigned to the same program for many years and provide continuity," Colonel Bunch said. "Military pilots bring more recent operational experience and warfighters' perspective."

Colonel Kromberg said he was appreciative of this opportunity to fly the F-35.

"Though I am the first government pilot, this flight is really just a continuation of the ongoing successful test effort the contractor, government and partner countries take part in each day," Colonel Kromberg said. "I am very humbled at this opportunity to represent the Air Force as the first government F-35 pilot."

The F-35 is scheduled to arrive at Edwards AFB for further flight tests in the spring.

Army CH-47 Chinook Helicopters Rise To Afghan Combat Challenges

Army Sargent Victor Gardner reports in this military news video on a CH-47 Chinook air assault into the mountains of Afghanistan to destroy two weapons caches. The mission was carried out by Task Force Rakkasan, Apache Company, 1-33 Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division along with elements of the Afghan National Army.

The CH-47 helicopters lifted the Rakkasans into the hills touching down with a pinnacle landing. On arrival, the weapons and other supplies of the insurgents were destroyed.

The Rakkasans have a long and distingushed history in airborne combat stemming back to operations in the Pacific Theater of WWII.

Air Force F-117 Stealth Fighter Retires - F-22 F-35 Replace

After years of service, some of it top secret, the United States Air Force is to retire the F-117A Nighthawk, the first so-called Stealth Fighter, in April 2008. Built by the famous Lockheed "Skunk Works" in a classified program, the plane pioneered low observable technologies now applied to the F-22 Raptor, F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), and B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber. Retirement of the F-117, occasionally called the Wobbly Goblin, is intended to save the Air Force funds for other programs.

Nikon D7000 Ship Date October 15

The Nikon D7000 DSLR camera will likely begin shipping on 15 October 2010 according to a source at Nikon USA.

I spoke to this source directly and they told me to expect shipments of the Nikon D7000 to begin as early as the 15th but it could be as late as October 25, 2010. The same source was asked about the availability of additional batteries. In response I was told to look for the optional MB-D11 battery pack and spare EN-EL15 (new model) when the camera begins shipping. The new Nikon EN-EL15 battery is supposed to provide up to 1050 shots per charge in the D7000.

Canon EOS 60D Shipping

The blogosphere is buzzing with reports that the Canon EOS 60D HD video capable DSLR camera is starting to ship from various retailers. A check this morning of heavyweight BH Photo Video in New York still shows the body only as approximate arrival September, but the kit lens version is listed out to October.

Amazon.com is also saying it is not yet available and the same goes for the site linked above. However, there are unboxing videos appearing online so some product is clearly in the pipeline. I've also seen forum reports saying the AF on the Canon 60D is outstanding. Here is an example: "Mine is *fantastically* accurate (stupidly so). I've had maybe 3 misses in 2,000 shots," said one forum post.

DSLR Market Heats Up With Nikon D7000 and Canon EOS 60D

Photographers who want to shoot video have much to be excited about with the two new cameras on offer from industry icons Nikon and Canon. This is actually the second piece of Nikon news as they recently announced a new model D3100, but that camera was such a yawn my first reaction was TTQN = Time To Quit Nikon.

My faith in Nikon was restored when the D7000 was announced though it still leaves much to be desired.

First, lets talk about the Canon EOS 60D. With a single glaring exception, this is a kick-ass offering from Canon. It is an 18 megapixel DSLR that also shoots 1080 p HD video. Sure, the body is not professional quality and the sensor is not full sized, but in the emerging world of DSLR video and still shooting, this camera got a lot right.

The resolution is very respectable as is the 60D's ability to use an external stereo microphone with complete manual control of that mic's level. The camera also features a fully articulated screen display which allows self-shooting reporters/documentary shooters to see their framing without running back and forth to the camera.

There are three 1080 p frame rates on the Canon EOS 60D as well as several options at lower video resolutions. The camera also works with the vast majority of very fine Canon lenses out there so it should fit right in to many camera bags and yield excellent results. Where Canon fell flat on this body was video autofocus. While other video cameras have this feature and even Nikon has shown it on two DSLRs, for Canon it was a bridge too far. In most other respects for the price, this is a very good offer from Canon. There are rumors that another announcement from Canon is coming soon so perhaps they will overcome the autofocus issue with the new product?

Next up, what may very well be my next camera, the Nikon D7000. This DSLR is a bit more expensive than the Canon 60D, has less resolution at 16.2 megapixels, lacks full manual control of an external microphone and is missing the multiple frame rates at 1080 p as well as the useful variable angle LCD monitor of the Canon offering, serious drawbacks all, but it does offer something the Canon body lacks: real autofocus during video shooting and live view operation.

Now before you go saying "professional video folks and cinematographers never use autofocus," a) you are wrong about pro video folks, they do use it on some occasions but film cameras used by cinematographers don't ever offer autofocus so that point would be correct. But, b) there are times when it can be handy and it sure as heck is a great feature to offer.

To clarify an earlier point, the Nikon D7000 offers limited manual control of an external stereo microphone: off, low, medium and high. Eh. Not great but I can live with it. The camera body will work with an amazing array of Nikon Nikkor lenses, even some of the older lines but in some cases limited functionality. The body, while not fully pro, is a metal allow and very well sealed against dust and moisture. Both it and the Canon both offer HDMI jacks which is nice but the 60D's manual states that live viewing via HDMI may result in a smaller image size than full HD. That is not the case during playback and I've not seen the D7000's manual yet.

An area where Nikon has consistently failed is the delivery of 1080 p HD video. It is as if they were sleeping. With this body and the D3100 they finally have their first offers, but how long after Canon has had it on body after body? Even now the D7000 only offers 1080 p at 24 fps (23.97). Really? Come on Nikon. No 25 or 30 fps?

I do like the duel SD card slots, acceptable resolution, lens compatibility, external mic jack, iso range (starting at 100), and relatively high speed 6 frames per second still shooting for a camera of this class.

What's missing? Those other 1080 p frame rates (I actually want to see 60 p, and even 120 p for action), real external microphone manual control (perhaps two real jacks too - even xlr), the vari angle lcd monitor viewfinder, and how hard would it be to add a mini-phone headphone jack?

So faced with the choice of switching from Nikon to Canon for the 60D, given a bag of Nikon accessories and lots of Nikkor glass, I find the D7000 is a compelling argument to keep it Nikon. For now.

Ryanair honcho Michael O'Leary is telling the media that pay toilet's are back on the agenda despite admitting that the last time the subject came up it was nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt.

I've not seen it but published reports state that Ryanair's in-flight magazine claims the pay to pee scheme could allow the airline to cut fares by 5%. Utter nonsense!

Cell Phone Service Review - T-Mobile's Epic Failure

While traveling in Indiana I thought I was just in an area where my T-Mobile Sidekick was without coverage and went days without data/internet access, chalking it up to the small town's lack of signal.

Only when friends came to town from Chicago did they inform me that T-Mobile was having a system-wide outage on all Sidekick data! For some reason I was never informed about it (later they sent vague texts about hopeful progress on restoring the data, but never anything useful).

The old adage used to be "if you have a problem, take out the battery" and I basically stopped calling customer support because that's their end-all trick to solving problems. Except NOT THIS TIME. This time, if you removed your battery you lost your address book and pictures and anything else stored in the cloud, which meant the phone/address book for all of the people I was trying to meet up with on my travels was suddenly nonexistent.

Since I didn't have data, I called the one number I knew by heart and asked for assistance on my route. I normally use Google Maps to find my way, but was suddenly rendered directionless. My 300 minute plan was basically exhausted instantaneously because instead of Googling things on my own, I had to call to get any relevant information necessary along my way. You never know how much you rely on Google until it's not on hand in the middle of a state where you've never been and you just need to find the highway that will take you to Turkey Run State Park so you can get a photo of the ladders that looked so neat on flickr.

On top of all that, my battery is dying. I've had the phone for probably a year and my usage (if you couldn't tell by the previous paragraphs) is outlandishly often. I schlepped into the T-Mobile store to ask for assistance with both my bill (because I knew I'd gone over my allotted 300 minutes due to the data outage) and my battery dilemma, but after I waited in line for 20 minutes, they declared that their system was down and actually couldn't help any of us right then. I forged forth, stating I just needed a battery, so the employee searched their inventory as well as the online inventory and neither had a battery in stock, but I could try Radio Shack OR upgrade to a new phone... !! I'm like yeah, NO and left, figuring I'd find my own battery and fix the billing issues online.

Came home and logged into t-mobile.com to change the billing and/or my plan and everything keeps coming back NO, try again later. WHY IS EVERYTHING ALWAYS BROKEN? The data outage, the in-store system outage, and now an online outage!!!!!

So I called Customer Service - will their phone system work?? - that is the question! The cocky representative told me "Uh, didn't you try logging out and back in?" Like that's what everybody does and have I ever even used the internet before? I said I hadn't tried that, I will, and he's like "That's how websites work. We make changes and sometimes the servers on one page aren't updated yet when you log in." I'm like "Or you can make the changes and then update the page from the previous rendition?" And he's all "Ma'am we serve 30,000 customers!" In the end I weaseled a $20 credit for the overages but to solve the battery issue I need to call back on another phone line, since everybody has another phone line waiting around for these instances. WTF I HATE T-MOBILE SO HARD.

AdSense Ads To Include Ad Networks

The Google AdSense program may be getting much better, or worse, thanks to the mega corp's announcement that the AdSense program will include advertising bids and creatives from outside, or so-called third party ad networks.

The upside is that this could mean more bids and higher prices for indie publisher's inventory, and thus more revenue to small bloggers and site publishers. The bad news is that quality control of ad inventory is always tricky, and never one of the AdSense program's strong suits in my opinion.

Now there are new networks to police and manage, but, Google is giving you tools, blunt tools, to deal with it.

You can block all third party ad networks (very blunt, could hurt your revenue big time), specific networks, or all future networks but those that you have already approved. No creative or ad by ad approval is on offer.

For those with family friendly sites this lack of granularity is VERY RISKY if you allow any networks to run. It is also unclear if the code invoked on page will call elements from outside of the doubleclick or google domains. Some company, government and school systems block websites based on such criteria. If you depend on such traffic think hard about these new options.

Another issue is malware. These other networks are possible sources, like many very legit ad networks, of malware or malicous software (trojans, viruses, etc.) running in ad units. Search online and you can find examples of even major websites and ad networks that have unknowingly infected innocent users. Google's AdSense program has historically been pretty safe. Hopefully (but they are so far silent on this) they will have safety systems in place to be certain all creatives they serve are malware-free.

The bottom line: be careful and monitor your sites. I hope for all of our sakes that this competition for our AdSense impressions brings more revenue in these challenging times.

Spring Airlines Wants Passengers To Stand

Oh what a world. Trade magazine Flight International is reporting that China's Spring Airlines has asked Airbus if they can develop a solution that will essentially create a "standing" airline seat.

The goal, unsurprisingly, is to increase aircraft capacity on Spring's fleet of Airbus A320s. The motivation, questionably, is that "We want to have it so more people can afford to fly," says Zhang Wuan, as quoted by Flight.

The approach involves something like a bar stool with a belt. Questions remain if such a system can be certificated. I don't believe in censorship but I hope this story is kept from the eyes of US air carriers like United Airlines.

TWA Flight 800 Pictures

The sad anniversary of TWA Flight 800 is approaching on July 17. The tragic crash occurred in 1996 when an aging Boeing 747 literally exploded shortly after take-off from New York.

There is still much controversy surrounding the cause of the plane crash but no doubt that this picture is an unusual bit of history. We have a bunch of pictures of the plane that became TWA Flight 800 shortly before the crash and they are available as royalty free stock photography.

Verticals, horizontals, facing the camera, turning away, all taken at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as the aircraft approached to take off. The shots reveal an aging jumbo jet with wrinkles and missing paint.

Machinima Flight Simulator Movies

Wow, pardon the dust, but we've been busy adding new features all over the place. The most recent is a fun section dedicated to the art and science and fun of making Machinima Flight Simulator Movies.

Have you heard of them? Machinima is video making using recordings of video game scenes. Now this can be as simple as what happened when you were playing a game or as sophisticated as staging scenes that are carefully crafted into entertaining, and in some cases breathtaking videos.

People do them with games like World of Warcraft and other combat types, but we are interested in those produced with flight simulator games like the new Flight Simulator X or classic Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The Apollo 11 mission objectives were to land men on the lunar surface and to return them safely to Earth. The crew consisted of Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, Command Module pilot; and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin Jr., Lunar Module pilot. July 2009 marks the 40th anniversery of the landmark mission.

After a rest period, Armstrong and Aldrin entered the Lunar Module preparing for descent to the lunar surface. The two spacecraft were undocked at about 100 hours, when the Command and Service Modules separated from the Lunar Module. The spacecraft landed in the Sea of Tranquillity at 4:18 p.m. EDT. Afterwards, they ate their first meal on the Moon and decided to begin the surface operations earlier than planned.

A Lunar Module camera provided live television coverage of Armstrong setting foot on the lunar surface at 10:56 p.m. EDT. Just as he stepped off the Lunar Module Neil Armstrong proclaimed, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." Aldrin emerged soon after, setting foot on the lunar surface at 11:16 p.m. EDT. Aldrin evaluated his ability to operate and move about and was able to move about rapidly and with confidence. Forty-seven pounds of lunar surface material were collected to be returned for analysis. The surface exploration was concluded in 2.5 hours, when the crew re-entered the lunar module.

After lunar ascent, the Lunar Module docked with the Command and Service Modules at 128 hours. The crew transferred into the Command and Service Modules, the ascent stage was jettisoned and they prepared for trans-Earth injection. Only one midcourse correction was required, and passive thermal control was used for most of trans-Earth coast. Bad weather made it necessary to move the splashdown point 346 kilometers (215 miles) downrange. Atmospheric entry phase was normal, and the command module landed in the Pacific Ocean at 195.25 hours. The landing coordinates, as determined from the onboard computer, were 13 degrees 30 minutes north latitude and -169 degrees 15 minutes east longitude.

Plane Crash Footage

Aerial photography and video shop AeronauticPictures.com has added a dedicated section to their Royalty Free Stock Footage collection for plane crash stock footage.

The new section includes the very famous accident at the El Toro Airshow on April 24, 1988, involving Marine Corps Colonel Jerry Cadick (CO of MAG 11). His plane struck the ground before a crowd estimated at over 300,000 people at the bottom of a loop.

The AeronauticPictures.com footage includes two camera angles and was shot on Betacam.

Alitalia Deletes Sicily From Map

Ciao Bella, maybe not. Italian flagship airline Alitalia has some marinara sauce on its face after its in-flight magazine published a map of the Mediterranean and left Sicily out.

The airline has apologized for the error and blamed it on a printing mistake.

Qatar Airways Warns Boeing Over 787 Delays

London-based Flight International is reporting that Qatar Airways has publicly warned Boeing that 787 program delays and the aerospace giant's handling of the airline's concerns are putting their important commercial relationship in serious jeopardy.

The magazine quotes the airline's chief executive Akbar Al Bake as saying, "We at Qatar Airways have some serious issues with Boeing and if they do not play ball with us they will be in for a very, very serious surprise if we do not settle the issues on the 787."

On the overall direction of Boeing Commercial Airplanes Al Bake states, "...Unfortunately Boeing is not run by commercially minded people, it is being run by bean counters and lawyers and if they continue this way they will give an even bigger advantage to Airbus," according to Flight International.

Frankly, the response from Boeing also published by Flight only supports the allegation of a soulless mega corporation, "...We are working closely with each of our customers and we are confident of the value this airplane will bring to airlines and passengers around the world."

How about something like We value Qatar Airways like all of our customers and very much care about their concerns?

US Airways Hudson Crash Customers Dunked By AIG

The New York Times is reporting that passengers aboard US Airways Flight 1549, the Airbus that crashed in the Hudson River, are getting soaked again, so to speak, by the airline's insurance firm, AIG (American International Group). Yes, the same AIG that has been drinking from the teat of the American taxpayer.

Apparently hiding behind a contractual loophole (the absence of a finding of liability due to negligence), AIG has thus far, according to the Times, failed to do what is right. Instead they have been playing hardball with the folks who had already endured the trauma of a Hudson River water landing in a decidedly un-seaplane-like Airbus.

It should be noted that the airline itself, without legal obligation, immediately paid each passenger $5,000.00 for short term needs.

On the other hand, perhaps another yet tangential example of the "core values" behind AIG is illustrated by the trial underway of former Chief Executive Maurice "Hank" Greenburg. He is accused of improperly taking some $4.3 billion. Just writing about those people makes me feel like I should take a shower.

Airline Ryanair Serious About Pay To Pee Scheme

That's right, the empty vessel at the head of Ryanair, Michael O'Leary has told the Guardian (and more than a few others) that he is absolutely serious about charging his passengers for a bit of sanitary relief. It is a Pay To Piss scheme and from this writer's vantage point, it ought to be flushed down the bog along with O'Leary's tenure at the airline.

It takes a special kind of selfish, greedy, heartless and unconscious, uh, person, to even seriously consider such a plan, let alone take steps to implement it. Or is it all publicity stunt? If so, the electrons allocated here were suckered in.

But I think not. He claims to have had Boeing working on several aspects of this ranging from how to process payments for the poop to changes in interior seating if you pull some of the heads (bogs, toilets, water closets) out. Yes, he has gleefully pointed out that if you pull toilets you can fit more seats.

Dibs on bringing the first bog roll on board the first converted pay toilet plane with his portrait imprinted on each sheet!

Insensitive Capital One Keeps Running Plane Crash Commercial

Funny Dog Pictures

Everybody loves funny dog pictures, right? Well, I do. And I've got a great resource for personal and professional (advertising, editorial use in newspapers and magazines, etc.) funny dog stock photography.

Stock photography is any photography that already exists. That means you don't have to shoot it yourself or pay someone else to go out and shoot it. It also means you don't have to worry about if the weather was nice, the dog did what you were hoping it would do, the camera worked correctly, etc., because somebody else already worried all about that and they already shot that cool dog picture you are looking for! And the digital images are really cost-effective too when you get them royalty free (that means buy it once and use it many times again).

If there is a downside to stock photography for the buyer it is that most stock photos are not available exclusively, so the very same picture could end up being used by your competition. If you need exclusive use of a photograph contact the royalty free stock photography library and ask if the image is available exclusively and at what cost. You might be surprised how inexpensive exclusive rights turn out to be... and if you don't ask you don't get.

The first photo (above) was a Poodle sporting a dyed Mohawk. This next one is an "oh-so-ugly-it-is-cute" Pug wearing a lion costume.

Last but by no means least is an adorable Yorkshire Terrier dressed as Daisy Duke.

Stealthy F-22 Raptor Jet Fighter Video - Going Overseas

iPhone - Resistance Is Futile

It is about time the personal electronics body count dropped instead of swelled. I for one am sick of carrying around a pager, laptop, PDA, music player and cell phone.

What, you don't have all that junk? How can you be happy?

Actually, I don't have most of that junk either.

I wait...

And I wait...

And I wait some more...

Perhaps the wait is over?

I've always been a Windows PC kinda guy. Price/performance and all that.

The Apple products, while pretty and capable, are both expensive and far from bullet proof when it comes to reliability. Yet recently I must admit to a bit of lust for an Apple Mac Pro desktop. They are brilliant for video editing work after all.

So the iPhone really peaked my interest. I mean, I've got iTunes but no iPod.

I've got a cell phone (and with the "right" carrier too).

My laptop died. I can't see how a PDA could replace one, so neither was on my shopping list for a while.

The pager has seen its day. Mine got fired when I could route my missed calls to my cell phone's voice mail at a reasonable price.

So, iPhone, can you handle this?

Well it is no laptop, but it does offer better than typical cell phone web browsing, the Apple-claimed "desktop-class email," and some other fairly typical web related features that ought not to be claimed as iPhone's goodies. For example, in the tour on the Apple website they claim the iPhone delivers "maps."

The flash movie simply shows the device browsing to Google Maps. Yawn. Not new.

What does set my techie heart a pitter patter are things like the "sensors." There are several. The accelerometer tells the iPhone which orientation to display the image (landscape or portrait - aka horizontal or vertical). Its proximity sensor knows when you are holding the phone up to your sweaty, greasy or make-up coated face. When you do it shuts off the display to save energy (battery life).

And finally it knows how bright the room is - so the display can adjust itself - automatically for best power use and readability.

All and all pretty cool. Me thinks that when they are available retail I'll need to see one face-to-glowing face. Maybe, just maybe, the iPhone has brought real device convergence home. Finally.

Airbus A380 Earns FAA - EASA Type Certification

Well, they did it. The folks at Airbus announced today that they have joint certification from European and US authorities. Sure the program has had troubles - that should come as no surprise - all new flight test efforts run into some issues - but this is a huge airplane with new technologies and very tough performance goals. Hats off to Airbus. It is always wonderful to see people with vision push the leading edge!

Plane Belonging to New York Yankees Pitcher Cory Lidle Crashes Into Building in New York City

Details are very sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a light plane has hit a building on the upper East Side of New York City.

According to the AP, the plane was owned by New York Yankees Pitcher Cory Lidle. The wire service says he was on the plane and that 4 people are known to be dead, but it is not known if Lidle is among those killed in the crash. We have the video from the Associated Press network feed at the link below.

Plane Crash In Valletta, Malta, Kills One Pilot After Mid-Air Collision

Airbus A380 First Passenger Test Flight - Free Video

Airbus says their A380 Mega Jumbo Jet took off from Blagnac International Airport in Toulouse, France, at 09:58 am local time September 4th.

What made the trip historic and noteworthy was the payload of 474 passengers on board for the first in a series of four long flights or "Early Long Flights".

During this flight and others, the passengers, made up of Airbus employees and cabin experts, will put the large plane's cabin through its paces.

Interesting that they did not invite the news media along for the ride!

NASA Gives LockMart The Moon

NASA has picked Lockheed Martin Corp to build the Orion spacecraft. If all options and production orders are exercised the value of the deal could be $8.15 billion.

Yah, billion with one of those "Bs."

Against that keep in mind this could deliver an unspecified number of spaceships for flight to the lunar surface as well as the ISS (International Space Station).

And that each nuclear powered aircraft carrier or missile submarine runs, in round numbers, $2 billion. Or did.

By contrast this seems cheap but we've not yet begun to overrun our budget!

Orion should be able to carry 4 crew to the moon and six to the ISS. The hope is Mars missions will use the moon base as a jumping off point - made possible in part by the Orion vehicle.

Watch for the first crewed or "manned" (as NASA stills says) launch of Orion sometime in 2014. The moon is due for a visit in 2020. Can't wait to see the pictures.

Sounds like another FAA staffing and labor problem to me. Sure the pilot is responsible for making sure they are on the correct runway - I'm not speaking to that specific issue with the prior sentence - but there is an ongoing hostility between the FAA administration and the working folks in the towers and centers. And safety suffers because of it.

NTSB To FAA: Urgent GE CF6-80A Jet Engine Fixes Recommended

The NTSB has once again whipped the FAA in public for moving too slow on issues the Safety Board feels are urgent. You may recall the incident in June, 2006, when the high-pressure turbine (HPT) stage 1 disk left the building like Elvis during a run-up at LAX while hanging under an American Airlines Boeing B-767.

According to the NTSB "Debris from the failed engine punctured the airplane's left and right wing fuel tanks; leaking fuel ignited and damaged the wing and fuselage. As promised, we've got our network-quality tv news coverage running on the tragic crash of Comair Flight 5191. In preparing the reporting we've noticed a discrepancy in the reporting of the accident aircraft's model number. Some members of the press and the FAA are calling it a CRJ-100. The NTSB's website says it was a CRJ-200.

There are references and details in the body of the initial report. Be sure to scroll down all the way on the item with the video. At the top of the story you'll see the standard tv news item. At the bottom we've included the NTSB factual briefing video as well.

We now also know the lights were off on the take off runway. The co-pilot, who has so far survived, was apparently flying the airplane when the accident occurred.

On July 4, NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft will attempt an extraordinarily daring encounter with the far-flung comet Tempel 1 hurtling through space at tens of thousands of miles per hour. As if that is not challenging enough, the comet's size, shape and other characteristics are not entirely known.

Two of NASA's eyes in the sky, the Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescopes, helped scientists prepare for the comet encounter. From their orbits high above Earth, the telescopes watched Tempel 1 in early 2004. Together they came up with the best estimates of the comet's size, shape, reflectivity and rotation rate. The data may help Deep Impact snap pictures of the dramatic rendezvous and increase the probability of making contact with the comet.

"Even tiny adjustments to our model of Tempel 1 are crucial to hitting the target and setting camera exposure times," said Dr. Carey Lisse, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Md. Lisse is team leader for the Tempel 1 Spitzer studies.

Previous observations of Tempel 1 taken with ground-based telescopes indicated the comet is dark and oblong, with a width of a few miles. Spitzer and Hubble refined these measurements, revealing a matte black comet approximately 8.7 by 2.5 miles, or roughly one-half the size of Manhattan Island, N.Y.

"Spitzer was crucial in pinning down the comet's size," said Dr. Michael A'Hearn, University of Maryland, College Park. He is principal investigator for Deep Impact and the Hubble observations. "We'll know exactly what it looks like when we get there," he said.

The Deep Impact spacecraft was launched on January 12, 2005. Its mission is to study the primordial soup of our solar system, which is sealed away inside comets.

On July 3, as it approaches Tempel 1, the spacecraft will separate into two parts. The impactor will attempt the tricky task of placing itself in the path of the speeding snowball, while the second part, the flyby spacecraft, swings around for a ringside view.

After the impactor is released, its specialized software will steer it toward the sunlit portion of Tempel 1's nucleus. To program the software, mission planners at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) needed to know the size and reflectivity of Tempel 1's surface. Since its surface can't be observed directly from Earth, scientists turned to Spitzer's infrared eyes to measure its size.

When viewing a comet in visible light from very far away, only reflected sunlight can be seen, so a big, dark comet can look the same as a highly reflective, small comet. In infrared light, a comet's radiated heat is measured, providing a direct look at its size.

Once the size of Tempel 1 was known, scientists could calculate surface reflectivity. They calculated the amount of reflected, visible light observed by Hubble and found Tempel 1 reflects only four percent of the sunlight that falls on it.

"Knowing the reflectivity also tells us how to set up our cameras," Lisse said. "Like photographers, it's important for us to know our subject before the shoot."

Tempel 1's shape and two-day rotation rate were derived from long-term observations made by various telescopes, including Hubble, Spitzer and the University of Hawaii's 2.2-meter telescope at Mauna Kea.

In addition to the flyby spacecraft images, at least 30 telescopes around the world, including Spitzer, Hubble and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, will be watching the dramatic impact. By analyzing the material blown out of the interior of the comet, this global network of telescopes will assemble a list of the raw ingredients that went into making the planets in our solar system.

Space News: NASA Selects New Frontiers Mission Concept Study

NASA announced a mission to fly to Jupiter will proceed to a preliminary design phase. The mission is called Juno, and it is the second in NASA's New Frontiers Program.

The mission will conduct a first-time, in-depth study of the giant planet. This mission proposes to place a spacecraft in a polar orbit around Jupiter to investigate the existence of an ice-rock core; determine the amount of global water and ammonia present in the atmosphere; study convection and deep wind profiles in the atmosphere; investigate the origin of the Jovian magnetic field; and explore the polar magnetosphere.

"We are excited at the prospect of the new scientific understanding and discoveries by Juno in our continued exploration of the outer reaches of our solar system during the next decade," said Dr. Ghassem Asrar, deputy associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

At the end of the preliminary design study, the mission must pass a confirmation review that will address significant schedule, technical and cost risks before being confirmed for the development phase.

Dr. Scott Bolton of Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colo., is the Principal Investigator. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., will provide mission project management. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver will build the spacecraft.

NASA selected two proposed mission concepts for study in July 2004 from seven submitted in February 2004 in response to an agency Announcement of Opportunity. "This was a very tough decision given the exciting and innovative nature of the two missions," Asrar added."

The selected New Frontiers science mission must be ready for launch no later than June 30, 2010, within a mission cost cap of $700 million.

The New Frontiers Program is designed to provide opportunities to conduct several of the medium-class missions identified as top priority objectives in the Decadal Solar System Exploration Survey, conducted by the Space Studies Board of the National Research Council.

The first NASA New Frontiers mission will fly by the Pluto-Charon system in 2014 and then target another Kuiper asteroid belt object.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, May 31, 2005 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Ethiopian Airlines today said the airline has increased its firm orders for the 787 Dreamliner to 10 airplanes by exercising purchase rights obtained with its initial order announced Feb 4. The airline is the first 787 customer to exercise purchase rights or options for the rapidly selling new Boeing jetliner.

Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing also said they have completed the contract for the airline's 10 Dreamliners, valued at US$1.6 billion at list prices.

"Having been the first to bring jet service to the African continent, Ethiopian Airlines is excited to once again be the first by launching operations in Africa with this revolutionary airplane," Ethiopian Airlines CEO Ato Girma Wake said. "The 787, represents the future—one in which Ethiopian Airlines will play a major part—and we view this airplane to be a cutting-edge solution to bolster our passenger service, improve our efficiencies and add to the airline's bottom line."

Ethiopian Airlines moved quickly to secure its five additional delivery positions for the 787 following a series of recent order announcements for the airplane, which is essentially sold out for its first three years of production. Its first 787 is scheduled for delivery to its Addis Ababa home base in 2008.

"The market appeal for the 787 continues to grow," said Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We're proud to strengthen our long-standing partnership with Ethiopian Airlines through the 787, which will help airlines all over the world operate profitably while flying people directly where they want to go, with exceptional comfort and with unmatched economic efficiency."

Ethiopian Airlines will be the first Africa-based operator of the technologically advanced and rapidly selling jet and one of the first anywhere to receive the Dreamliner.

Developed as an entirely new airplane and incorporating composite technology that lends to operating efficiencies and performance characteristics exceeding conventional airframes, Boeing's 787 continues to gain ground with airlines worldwide.

Boeing now has 266 orders and commitments from 21 customers for the 787. The Ethiopian Airlines order will be booked on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries Web site pending final documentation of U.S. Ex-Im Bank guarantees.

Boeing's partnership with Ethiopian Airlines dates back some 50 years. Today, it operates an all-Boeing fleet of 737 and 767 airplanes.

Require all 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 121 air
carrier operators to establish programs for flight
crewmembers who have demonstrated performance deficiencies

to ensure that performance deficiencies are addressed and

Authority and Memphis Fire Department, modify the November

Aboard the International Space Station (ISS), the Expedition 11 crew is spending the latter part of its second month in space preparing for the arrival of new cargo. The Station commander quietly slipped into second place on the all time human space endurance list.

Cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev and astronaut John Phillips conducted scientific research this week, while troubleshooting the station's oxygen generator, stowing trash and other unneeded items into the Progress supply spacecraft for disposal next week.

Krikalev, on his sixth voyage into space and third long duration mission (one on Mir and two on the ISS), surpassed fellow cosmonaut Valery Polyakov on the space duration record list. He will become number one in August, passing cosmonaut Sergei Avdeyev (747 days).

This afternoon, the Station passed over the Gulf of Mexico offering flight controllers an opportunity to capture video of Arlene, the Atlantic hurricane season's first tropical storm, as it tracked northward toward the U.S. Gulf Coast.

During the week, Krikalev swapped the large liquid unit component in the Station's Elektron oxygen generation unit in preparation for an attempt in two weeks to restore its use. New filters for its gas lines will arrive aboard the next Progress cargo spacecraft late next week. They will be installed before the crew attempts to reactivate the unit.

In the meantime, the crew continues to replenish the cabin atmosphere daily using two solid fuel oxygen generation canisters. The canisters introduce oxygen into the pressurized compartment by a chemical process. A plentiful supply of canisters is on board the Station, and more will arrive on the next supply ship June 18.

The onboard supply combined with future shipments can provide oxygen for the crew until at least January 2006, even without use of the Elektron. New Elektron components and spare parts are planned for delivery aboard supply spacecraft later this year.

Phillips put on his customized Lycra cycling tights this week for his second session of the Foot/Ground Reaction Forces during Spaceflight (FOOT) experiment. FOOT investigates the differences between use of the body's lower extremities on Earth and in space, and changes in the musculoskeletal system during spaceflight.

Phillips wore the instrumented Lower Extremity Monitoring Suit, which measured his joint angles, muscle activity and forces on the feet during a typical day on the Station. FOOT could help explain the reasons for bone and muscle loss during spaceflight and aid in the design of exercise countermeasures. This experiment also has significance for understanding, preventing and treating osteoporosis on Earth.

Focused human physiological and biological Space Station research on astronaut health and the development of countermeasures to protect crews from the space environment will allow for long duration missions to explore beyond low Earth orbit.

Early next week, the crew will wrap up stowage of trash and unneeded equipment in the Progress docked to the Station, prior to its undocking Wednesday. The Progress departure clears the docking port on the aft end of the Zvezda module for the arrival of the next supply craft. The next Progress is scheduled to launch June 16 and dock the evening of June 18. NASA TV will cover the arrival live. This will be the 18th Progress to dock with the Station.

WASHINGTON, DC -- A 60-day on-site investigation of the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility found that it is more than adequately staffed for safe operations and that local union-controlled scheduling practices are inefficient and wasteful, creating overtime costs that are more than double any other air traffic control facility in the country. (EDITOR'S NOTE: We welcome a Union response, please contact us.) The investigation also found recent management attempts to curb wasteful practices were met with resistance, followed by anonymous reports of "operational errors."

As a result of the investigation's findings, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is immediately acting to curb scheduling abuses that drive excessive overtime spending, address reports of intimidation and insubordination, and ensure controllers' adherence to existing high safety standards. (EDITOR'S NOTE: If anyone would know about waste, it would be the FAA.)

"The New York TRACON has more than enough staff to get the job done safely" said FAA Administrator Marion C. Blakey. "A schedule that is designed to maximize overtime pay is no schedule at all. The next step is for management to regain control of the daily work schedule and use overtime when traffic requires it."

On March 2, 2005, the FAA assembled a team of over 25 safety experts from around the country, including current and former air traffic controllers, current field supervisors, and human resource and organizational professionals to conduct an onsite operational assessment of the New York TRACON.

The team conducted a thorough audit of radar and voice data, facility scheduling practices, shift assignments, controller time-on-position, and overtime and leave usage. The team's audit also consisted of dozens of interviews with managers, supervisors, and employees and first-hand observation of control room operations.

The investigation showed conclusively that the shift scheduling of air traffic controllers - set through a series of agreements with local National Air Traffic Controllers Association officials beginning nearly 15 years ago - has not met the facility's operational requirements and in fact necessitates much of the scheduled overtime. The need for overtime was compounded, the report found, by absences due to widespread abuse of sick leave and workers compensation claims for stress routinely filed by some controllers. (EDITOR'S NOTE: Is the FAA claiming that working at a New York area TRACON would not be stressful?)

As a result, the New York TRACON, which handles fewer flights with more controllers than most large TRACONs around the country, incurred overtime costs of over $4 million in 2004 - more than double that of TRACONs in Chicago, Southern California, Atlanta and Denver combined. (EDITOR'S NOTE: Now, that is a biggy!)

Generous amounts of overtime allowed 21 controllers to earn more than $200,000 last year, not including benefits; this year, that number is projected to increase to 51. Many controllers logged overtime during weeks in which they also called in sick one or more days, resulting in six-and-a-half days' pay for five days of work, the study found.

The findings come after the FAA took steps to reduce NY TRACON overtime in response to a 2004 report by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Inspector General that found facility employees were manipulating the work schedule and using sick leave and annual leave to inflate overtime payments.

In 2004, the facility acted to reduce the availability of voluntarily-worked "credit hours," and in January 2005, management placed strict controls on overtime usage by controllers and supervisors. Just eight days later, the report said, the FAA began receiving anonymous hotline reports of operational errors. Local NATCA officials also publicly claimed at the time that facility understaffing was jeopardizing safety and launched a campaign to remove the acting manager at the facility - who was taking steps to curb overtime abuse.

The facts and data compiled by the special FAA evaluation team found the New York TRACON has the available staffing necessary to support safe operations and that none of the 160 operational errors - or loss of aircraft separation - reported or uncovered by the team posed any known risk of collision or required the pilot to take action or report a near miss. The operational errors that were classified as most serious under the agency's standards were attributable to performance problems by individual controllers, not staffing levels, the report found.

The report found no evidence of controller fatigue behind those operational errors that were detected; instead, the investigation concluded that controllers at the facility on average worked only 3 hours and 39 minutes a day managing traffic, the lowest of any major TRACON facility.

Many of the operational errors detected were technical violations of the separation standards on final approach, known as "compression errors," that occur when the separation between aircraft lined up for landing is briefly and minimally reduced as aircraft slow down as they approach the airport.

Other operational errors included violations of the strict separation standards for wake turbulence between large, heavy jets and smaller aircraft. Controllers responsible for wake turbulence errors have been retrained.

In response to the team's findings and recommendations, the FAA will take the following actions immediately:

· Restore management responsibility for scheduling of the facility by canceling the agreements that gave the union de facto control

· Appoint the acting manager as permanent manager at the facility effective as of today (2 June 2005 - Editor)

· Transition from an inefficient schedule that necessitates overtime to one used by most other major facilities, which should minimize overtime and save as much as $4 million per year

· Revamp its quality assurance program for controllers and increase supervisor presence on the control room floor

· Curb sick leave abuse, schedule manipulation and workers' compensation abuse

· Ensure a professional environment in the control room, including taking action to address threats and intimidation

· Turn over all evidence of inappropriate behavior to the Inspector General's office

The Administrator has also directed the FAA's Air Traffic Organization and Office of Aviation Safety to develop a more realistic separation criteria and policy on compression errors on final approach that recognizes the balance between safety and efficiency.

The FAA plans to keep in place for an indefinite period of time a special team of safety and human resource specialists to: assist current facility management to carry out these recommendations; to monitor the facility's ongoing performance; and, to ensure safety while these stronger management controls are being implemented.

On December 18, 2003, about 1226 central standard time, Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) flight 647, a Boeing MD-10-10F (MD-10), N364FE, crashed while landing at Memphis International Airport (MEM), Memphis, Tennessee.

The right main landing gear collapsed after touchdown on runway 36R, and the airplane veered off the right side of the runway. After the gear collapsed, a fire developed on the right side of the airplane. Of the two flight crewmembers and five nonrevenue FedEx pilots on board the airplane, the first officer and one nonrevenue pilot received minor injuries during the evacuation. The postcrash fire destroyed the airplane’s right wing and portions of the right side of the fuselage.

Flight 647 departed from Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK), Oakland, California, about 0832 (0632 Pacific standard time) and was operating under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 121 on an instrument flight rules flight plan.

FINDINGS:
The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable causes of the accident were

1) the first officer’s failure to properly apply crosswind landing techniques to align the airplane with the runway centerline and to properly arrest the airplane’s descent rate (flare) before the airplane touched down; and

2) the captain’s failure to adequately monitor the first officer’s performance and command or initiate corrective action during the final approach and landing.

The safety issues in this report focus on flight crew performance, emergency evacuations, MEM air traffic control and aircraft rescue and firefighting issues, and flight data recorder reliability.

A new capability is being added to the operation of the International Space Station. A final round of tests to commission remote control of the Station's Canadarm2 robotic arm from the ground was completed this week.

The 60-foot arm was maneuvered by ground control today to move in, latch onto a fixture on the exterior of the Station, release and move back out. The tests were the second and most complex remote control operations of the arm performed from the ground. The first set of tests completed earlier this year involved only basic movements. Completion of these two phases of commissioning will qualify the ground control capability to be considered for use during future Station operations.

During the tests, the arm was controlled by the robotics officer in the Space Station Flight Control Room of Mission Control. Aboard the Station, Flight Engineer and NASA Station Science Officer John Phillips monitored the activity. Normally, the arm is controlled by the Station crew using a robotics workstation in the Destiny Laboratory.

Other activities this week for the Expedition 11 crew included some brief additional troubleshooting of the Elektron oxygen generation unit. At the direction of Russian flight controllers, Commander Sergei Krikalev tightened a valve in the unit, attempted to pressurize the system and checked for leakage. Similar attempts may continue in the future using other Elektron components and additional monitoring. The Elektron, a system that can derive oxygen from water for use in the Station atmosphere, remains broken.

The crew continues to replenish oxygen aboard the Station daily using two solid fuel oxygen generation canisters, which contain chemicals that release oxygen when heated. Plentiful supplies of oxygen remain aboard the Station, and more is set to arrive on the next supply spacecraft later this month.

With reserves onboard the Station, plus those planned to arrive on future supply ships, oxygen is available for the crew until at least January 2006; even without use of the Elektron. New Elektron components and spares are planned for delivery by supply ships later this year.

Phillips conducted the Miscible Fluids in Microgravity experiment this week. The experiment studies how miscible (mixable) fluids interact without the interference of gravity. Studying the interactions between molecules that make up liquids is important for improving numerous processes ranging from making plastics to manufacturing medicines.

For the first part of the experiment, Phillips used a syringe to inject dyed water into honey. Investigators want to see if they merge into one stream of honey. Under normal gravity, the stream would sink. In weightlessness, the stream can be formed, but it is not known if the stream will break up like a stream of oil in water.

For the second part, Phillips injected an aspherical drop of water into the honey. The process was videotaped for 30 to 40 minutes and digital images were taken for two hours. Investigators on the ground were able to watch video of the experiments, as they were conducted in space. The results will be compared to computer simulations performed by the payload developers.

Next week, the crew will begin packing trash and unneeded equipment in the Progress cargo spacecraft docked to the Station. The Progress will be undocked on June 15. The next cargo vehicle will launch on June 16 and dock to the Station June 18. The crew is scheduled for light duty this weekend, including routine housekeeping tasks and family conferences.

Space News: Apollo 11 Astronaut Armstrong Peeved Over Clip

Apollo 11 Astronaut Neil Armstrong is mighty angry at his former barber according to a story in the Associated Press.

The AP says Armstrong is threatening to sue the hair cutter thanks to the barber's clandestine collection and subsequent sale of the moonwalker's locks to a celebrity hair collector. (Yuck!)

The contraband clippings supposedly fetched the barber all of $3,000; most of which is now gone on legal expenses since the kerfuffle broke out.

Armstrong's lawyer is demanding the hair back and, or, the money (for a charity selected by Armstrong).

On a purely personal note, in my misspent youth as an aerospace photojournalist, I once ran into the famously uncooperative Armstrong at an NBAA show.

One of my first memories as a child was that of watching the Apollo 11 mission flicker its black and white images into my riveted eyeballs.

The experience no doubt influenced and inspired my life. So when introduced to him by a colleague and professional associate of his, I very politely asked for his autograph.

From his reaction, you'd of thought I'd asked to give him the medical exam depicted in the movie The Right Stuff.

In the end, he did sign the program I'd handed to him.

Now I'm not some celebrity hounding autograph hunter. But the first human to walk on the moon, well, that's a biggy.

Armstrong bravely agreed to serve that role in those most hazardous and experimental days of spaceflight. But he was also privileged to enjoy that perpetually exclusive title of first human, heck, life form, from earth, to set foot or paw on another planetary body, if that is the correct way to reference a moon.

So find another barber Mr. Armstrong. But when you hear some young (or older) person tell you how much they appreciate all you've done and how inspired your amazing, brave and heroic service to our nation and planet have been, try to smile. And find your happy place.

Airline News: Airbus A380 Delay Hits Qantas

While it should surprise nobody, it is now official that the massive effort to deliver the Uber Jumbo Airbus A380 is behind schedule.

The expectation of delay comes not because of any specific error or flaw on the part of Airbus, but simply because the development of any new type of aircraft, let alone one of this grand scale, tends to run into difficulties and thus some schedule slips.

The specific causes for the setback(s) are unclear. It is very apparent that this trouble is going to cost Airbus - literally:

From a Qantas Press Release Issued 1 June 2005 -

Qantas today confirmed that the delivery of its first A380 would be delayed by six months as a result of manufacturing issues at Airbus.

The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said the airline was now scheduled to take delivery of the first of its 12 new A380 aircraft in April 2007.

"This is disappointing, given that we have met all of Airbus' deadlines for Qantas specifications, however we are developing contingency plans to ensure there is no impact on our schedules or available capacity during the six month delay."

Mr Dixon said possible contingencies under discussion included deferring the retirement of a number of aircraft, redirecting capacity, and bringing forward the delivery of other aircraft on order.

Mr Dixon said that all airlines with early A380 orders were in the same situation, and that Airbus had advised that the deliveries would be made in the same sequence with the same time differentials.

"We will be working closely with Airbus to ensure the new deadline is met," Mr Dixon said.

He said Qantas would also be seeking compensation from Airbus in line with the terms of its contract.

Singapore Airlines has also indicated its A380 deliveries are likely to be behind schedule.

In other Airbus A380 news, Flight International Magazine says the 560 ton (max take off weight) aircraft's advanced composite wheels and related brake system are also behind schedule due to industrial issues. The first four aircraft are apparently flying with aluminum gear as a stopgap measure.

Discovery (OV-103) is back in the hanger for a look under the hood. And in the wheel wells (see the Atlantis report near bottom of page). And... well, just about everywhere else.

From NASA:
Technicians performed borescope inspections of the retract link assembly in Discovery's landing gear door. The left-hand assembly was inspected and no cracks found. The closeout photos of the right-hand assembly were reviewed and showed no cracks. Auxiliary Power Units were successfully tested Wednesday.

Discovery will be removed from its External Tank (ET-120) and Solid Rocket Boosters on May 31. The Shuttle will be attached to its modified tank (ET-121) on June 7.

A new heater was added to ET-121 on the feedline bellows, part of the pipeline that carries the liquid oxygen to the orbiter's main engines. The heater is designed to reduce the potential for ice and frost buildup. Final work, including pull tests to ensure the heater is bonded properly and Thermal Protection System foam spray closeouts continue. Discovery is scheduled to roll back to the launch pad in mid-June.

The Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Raffaello was transferred back to the Space Station Processing Facility. The mission processing team will ensure fasteners, inside the module without adequate running torque to act as a secondary locking feature, do not disengage during ascent. Raffaello's hatch is scheduled to be opened on May 31. The additional tasks will not affect the STS-114 launch planning window.

Atlantis (OV-104) is prepping for a trip back to the International Space Station (ISS)

Technicians continue power-up testing on Atlantis for its mission (STS-121) to the International Space Station. Forward, mid-body and aft-area closeouts continue.

Following the discovery of a small crack in a retract link assembly on the right-hand main landing gear, the assembly was removed from the vehicle for analysis. A spare assembly was installed Thursday.

Space Shuttle Main Engine leak checks and hydraulics leak checks are complete. Final flight controls' cycling is finished. Orbiter KU-Band antenna testing and flight controls aerosurface checkout also are complete.

What is NEEMO 6?

NEEMO - the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations program -- sends groups of NASA employees and contractors to live in Aquarius for up to two weeks at a time. For NASA, Aquarius provides a convincing analog to the International Space Station, and NEEMO crewmembers experience some of the same tasks and challenges underwater as they would in space.

And the 6? 6=Mission number.

Aquarius?

Like the environment of space, the undersea world is a hostile, alien place for humans to live. Far beneath the waves near Key Largo, Fla., an underwater laboratory called Aquarius provides a safe harbor for scientists to live and work for weeks at a time.

Owned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and managed by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Aquarius operates 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles) off Key Largo in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It is deployed next to deep coral reefs 62 feet (19 meters) below the surface.

The laboratory is most often used by marine biologists, for whom Aquarius acts as home base as they study the coral reef, the fish and aquatic plants that live nearby and composition of the surrounding seawater. Aquarius houses sophisticated lab equipment and computers, enabling scientists to perform research and process samples without leaving their underwater facilities.
